The Difference Between Being & Doing

I shared this with my newsletter list this week and it set off some light bulb moments for a lot of people. So I felt like sharing this with everyone today, enjoy!

Get up, get dressed, show up, work hard, play hard and live!

Yep, such is a day in the life of your average motivated human being. Although that is a whole lot of human doing opposed to human ‘being’…

‘We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, We are spiritual beings having a human experience’ – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

So what happens when we forget that life is about being rather than doing?

Well I’ve noticed in my own experience that it all becomes about where I’m going or who I am to become. I forget me being and fall straight into ego. My attention was solely on the outcome and results in all areas of life. I was experiencing myself as though there was me and this life I had to live.

What this meant was my life was my identity. It was all about how my life looked, what I had, who I was and what was next.

I was never simply here. Here in this present moment.

I was in the grind of my daily life, thinking in order to feel. Believing my freedom came from the choices I made rather than realising I was already free to simply be.

Until I stopped and connected with myself, I was attached, in need and never truly free. How did I recognise this?

Well if I felt to do something different one day to that very first line I wrote, I couldn’t. I couldn’t just stop because I was scared that if I did, life as I know it would cave in on me and I’d lose what I had worked so hard for or get slapped in the face by life for not having worked hard enough so that I could stop.

They say the best way to control people, is just give them a little of what they think they need… Who they are I don’t know. But I know that game. I’ve been caught in it and lived through it.

Why do you think most people look forward to the weekend?

I believe its because when the weekend comes, we can be ourselves. We do what we love and feel free. But then comes Monday again and we go back into doing things that aren’t necessarily true for us again.

The only way we will ever free ourselves is to come back to our beingness. Because in being we are able to let go of the fear from not doing and only then do what we truly feel moved to do.

This week I encourage you to find things you love to enjoy in life, experiences where time stops and your totally being yourself.

It could be to simply go for a walk, hang out with someone you love or just read a book. What ever it is, find those things and bring them into your life so you can begin to remember and feel what its like to simply be again.
