Do What You Love, Love What You Do!
Its all about the Love and doing what you love. This blog post is about how you can do what you love and love what you do with some very basic steps.
Recently I went to an event about inspiring start up businesses. Thank you to the founder of this event Rebecca Law of Nourish Co. She herself is one individual that is truly inspiring. Creating a space for others to be the same through this event was beautiful to experience.
The event featured five individuals under the age of thirty-five who spoke about their inspiring ideas for businesses they had started.
These business ideas involved doing what their innovators loved. All of the speakers had left successful jobs to start doing what they love. One man, had an incredible tea business he created to get past his sugar addictions. He left his job in investment banking at the peak of his career. This person had come to realise that, no matter how much money he made, he would still be caught on the work treadmill, doing what he was doing to maintain his present income.
It really hit home when he was asked to manage a fund for a family worth $450 million. A whopping $370 million of that was in cash. That meant they would have been earning around $400,000 per week—in interest alone.
What this young man noticed was that this family still worked as hard as he did to ensure their money kept growing and deals kept flowing. In other words they weren’t really living life but rather managing what they thought brought them safety, security and freedom in life. They weren’t free to do what they felt with their time as the power they had given money and what it meant to them in their lives controlled them.
This made him really think about what he was doing with his time. He asked the question: Am I really doing what I love? He decided he would rather be spending his time doing something he loved—regardless of the money it brought in.
This decision led him to follow his passion for tea and create an online business which has had some incredible success.
One of the other speakers was my girlfriend, another person who left behind her career to follow her passion. She was dancing and acting until she noticed her health had declined to a scary place which found her lying in a hospital. This was her wake up call. She now runs a very successful health and wellness business online. She helps inspire women to reach their optimum health and best lives. She leads by example by living what she preaches, following her heart every day, doing only what she loves. This has sometimes been called illogical by some as its meant straying away from the norm. But it’s what felt true for her. Her courage to face fears has propelled her forward in her industry and seen her truly live a life of fulfillment in the now.
She is now through doing what she loves giving purpose to what she does. This key point is huge because a lot of us go out into the world looking to find purpose in what we do. When we are following our hearts, purpose will flow through us by expressing into that which we do.
I noticed that both of these speakers, and the others had the courage to leap into the unknown. They all had a simple idea that they felt passionate about. Without listening to the thoughts of fear, they choose to give it a go—no matter what.
One of the other speakers, Erika Geraerts, is founder of Willow & Blake. She was only twenty-two when she decided that working long hours was not for her. She ventured out and started a business with her two best friends. She takes the office with her each day to places she loves to be, such as: the beach, coffee shops, and restaurants. In the beginning, she knew it would be hard but Erika stuck at it. Now, she has a successful business. Erika mentioned that she was driven to do only what she loved. She put that energy into what she was doing each day. It’s not all about business but about incorporating what she does each day with who she loves being.
People feeling inspired to live there lives outside of their current boxed reality asked questions. Many of them were about how: How do I do what you have done? The answer was always simple: Take the first step! You don’t have to know how it will unfold or show up for you. You just have to take the first step toward that which you would love to do, or have, or be.
Here are some tips that were shared and also from my own personal experience:
Create Space
If you are not sure yet what it is you would love to do with your life, then look at what you don’t love doing. Then decide to let it go. Sometimes, we are so busy doing what we need that we don’t leave any room to allow what we love to surface.
Listen
Become aware of what it is that you notice you love doing. Notice how you feel when you do things you love. Your feelings and sense of being already know your truest expression in all areas of your life. You just need to listen and follow it.
Worst Case
If you know what it is you love to be doing with your life but are caught up doing all things out of need because you are fearing the ‘what if?’ scenarios, then imagine the worst case scenario and be prepared to experience it—if that’s what you’re meant to experience.
Knowing
Let go of having to know how things will work out. Let go of having to plan out the whole journey ahead. When you take the first step, the next will follow. Until you take that first step towards that which you love why would you feel you must know the whole road ahead?
Move
Just take the first step! Unless you are prepared to walk your path then who will do it for you? The answer is no one. Its your journey and that’s what makes it special and unique. Show us what you got!
Following your dreams and doing what you love may be the scariest thing in the world. But, you must ask yourself the question: Would I be happy doing what I am doing, knowing that, when I leave this life, I didn’t really give my dreams a chance?
