If I don’t see her down at South Bondi busting out some insane yoga poses, she’s probably out the back of Bondi Beach balancing upon a stand up paddle board or perched on a cliff top somewhere along the Bondi to Bronte coastal walk. Where ever it is, she is at peace and in her bliss.
Caroline Groth finds her home within through her yoga. Her story is truly inspiring, having battled cancer and now using the experience to truly live in the moment and do what she loves. Her insights are powerful and her wisdom heart felt. Enjoy meeting this amazing woman!
Who Is Caroline?
I’m Caroline and I’m a very long way from where I grew up, trying to live and lead a healthy, nutritious life whilst doing what I love.
Originally from Denmark, I decided to move to Sydney as 20 year old and almost 4 years later I’m still here, just as in love with this amazing country as the first day I sat foot here. To me; Home is where the heart is, and not necessarily where you were born. This was also why I decided to stay in Australia when I was diagnosed with cancer as 22 year old. I had the decisions to go back to Denmark and fight my battle there, surrounded by my family and childhood friends, but I knew deep down inside that if I did this it would be the same as ‘giving up’. On life, on cancer, on everything that I had worked so hard for. This was not even a possibility.
2 years later, I’ve just celebrated 3 months in remission from cancer. There were many days I thought this day would never come, but by changing my entire life with the way I eat, exercise and think I turned my life around and kicked cancer in its butt! I believe the way you think affects your body and the universe in ways I can’t explain. I believe negative thoughts are pure poison for your body and so for me, this was my biggest challenge in life – turning around the way you think, the way you perceive things, and the way you deal with things coming your way. And so I did – and because of this I’m lucky enough to still have life.
Carolines Interview
What does limitless living mean for you?
Letting go of everything that keeps me from being the best me and living to leave an impact and not just exist as a human being.
What has been your biggest challenge in life where you were faced with limitation in some way? How did you move through it?
When I was diagnosed with cancer in mid-April 2012 my life was turned upside-down in more ways than one.
Starting chemo and having to live your life in a completely different way, acknowledging you’re sick and limited in your way of life is extremely difficult. Meanwhile, I was born in Denmark, so my entire family was more than 16.000 kilometers away, when I decided to stay in Australia to fight my battle with cancer.
I solely relied on myself and my closest friends whom I, to this day, still owe absolutely everything.
However, it wasn’t until January 2013 I really turned my life around and became a healthy foodie & yoga junkie.
The reason? A few months earlier someone broke me inside. So very badly. I’ve never felt pain like that before. Pain in my heart, my body and my mind. Mix this negative, depressed and sad state of mind with chemo, lots of medicine and not a lot of food you have a bomb that’s bound to go off.
When I went into cardiac arrest in hospital in December 2012 (I still thank the Universe every day for bringing me back to life) and waking up in ICU to my loving friends I knew something had to change. If I wanted to live and beat cancer, beat anything that would come at me I needed to change everything. Nutrition, exercise, mind-set and much more.
And so I made my way through the jungle of different approaches to healthy, clean, raw eating, lost 20 kg’s and have finally found my way to become 90% vegan. Beating cancer and being in remission from January 2014 was the best thing to happen to me in my life and to this day I still believe I owe it all to my nutrition, yoga, positive thinking and the amazing souls that fill my life with joy. Your mind is so much stronger than what you think it is!
How often do you follow your intuition/gut feel in life?
I’d like to think I do so on most days. I have made many tough and heartbreaking decisions in my life based on my gut feel and I believe these decisions, though they hurt in the moment and following months, have made me into a better person who don’t compromise my beliefs and values.
What has been the most supportive practice you found to which has helped you through times when life felt limited?
Yoga!
Yoga opened my eyes and filled a massive void in my life. I never realized I’d been walking around missing a piece in my life but when I found Yoga I found myself. I practice yoga every day to calm and prepare my mind for anything that has happened in the past and what will happen in the future – I do this in order to fully live in the present. I give thanks to all the beautiful & inspiring people I’m lucky enough to have in my life and feel my heart being filled with love & joy.
How important has it been for you in working on yourself? Did you or do you have a mentor?
It helped me find purpose in life – purpose in all the things that happened to me and that I had to go through. From battling cancer to losing people I loved dearly, it helped me understand that we’re all on a path in life, and whether it’s good or bad, we need to embrace the obstacles that come at us to fully understand and appreciate the beautiful life we’re blessed to have.
I find inspiration and guidance by seeing other people living their life with such a passion it’s mind blowing. I’m very fortunate I have so many beautiful, inspiring, good-hearted people in my life that always pushes me to be the best version of myself.
So lets say in this moment you are totally limitless, free and happy. What would you love to do next?
I would love to spread the word about how much a healthy lifestyle – inside and out – can change your life in ways you never thought imaginable. And that no matter how deep and dark of a hole you’re in there’s always a way out. I’d love to show people how strong & beautiful they are as individuals and how solid the power of positive thinking can truly be.
