The Biggest Trap of All…

Do you know people who are unfailingly positive? I mean like really, really, really positive!

We have been taught that being positive is the way to living a happy and fulfilled life. Really, it kind of makes sense, when you think about it. We judge and label “positive” as a good thing. So, of course, that’s the way to be happy!  Right? If we accept this premise, then we should avoid negativity. It’s deemed to be a bad thing.

That’s why we are addicted to getting all the tools and techniques in life to help us fix and change the negative. Writers make a fortune on self-help books that teach how to be happy and have a positive outlook on life. We take drugs to numb our negative feelings. We try to keep so busy in life that we don’t have time to stop and feel the negativity.

So why are our efforts to be positive or really, really happy depressing us? I believe the reason is that we get so busy trying to be positive that we suppress negative feelings. When we do this, the negative will eventually have to express itself. It does so through feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress. These unexpressed, negative feelings can even result in physical illness and disease.

All this is a mind trap. We judge our past experiences as positive and negative. This, in turn, determines our positive or negative expectations of the future.

I’ll never forget when I was in property. I was feeling insecure because I had gone through a period of not having much success. My financial circumstances had really started to suffer. I remember going to events and speaking with others in the industry, always pretending that things were great. I would discuss my success and the great things that were happening at work. This made me feel over-confident and reassured for a moment.

Then, I would go home at the end of the day and feel so down, so depressed and uncertain of how things would work out. I realized I was so addicted to things going well that, when they didn’t go well, and money was no longer flowing in, I felt completely negative about myself.

So what is the point of all this? If we lose ourselves in what we perceive as our reality, we can then let go of our attachments to the experiences we are having. We then free ourselves of the responsibility for finding happiness from external sources. Once we do this, we free ourselves from the prison of the mind. We have neutralized our beliefs. In that moment, we are free to chose, free to use our free will to create the life we truly love. The possibilities are then limitless.

By all means, find balance in your life. To truly free yourself of the biggest trap, let go of what is deemed “positive” and “negative”.  Accept what is—without judgment. Who you truly are does not care about what is good or bad. It doesn’t care what you have or don’t have.

Just enjoy the ride—without getting caught up in analysis of the experience!
