Limit Breaker: Jessica Ainscough

Meet this weeks limit breaker. The incredible, beautiful and inspiring Jessica Ainscough.

I was lucky enough to become friends with Jess a couple of years ago. Her story is incredible, but even more incredible is the person she has become. When I read her answers to the questions in the interview, I was moved. Jess has really come to such a depth in understanding who she is and where her true power lies.

She’s raw, vulnerable and real in the way she shares and the person she is being. It’s these traits that I believe, have such an affect energetically when you spend time with her.

I’ll let you enjoy what is to be felt behind Jess’s words below. Know that what you feel within you is because of the depth and space which these words are being shared from.

I’m Jessica Ainscough —
a writer, author, motivational speaker and passionate Wellness Warrior.

I’m living proof that wellness starts in your mind, and that YOU are the most important authority on your own health & body. Over the past four years, I’ve shared my wellness story with hundreds of thousands of online readers — with daily blog posts, recipes, checklists, and inspiring interviews. As The Wellness Warrior, I’ve found my voice, my community, and a platform to do my best work in the world.

I Believe…

. . . That wellness isn’t a destination, but an ongoing relationship with your own body.
A loving relationship, built on kindness & respect.

. . . That dis-ease is often your body’s last-ditch attempt to get your attention — and demand some TLC.

. . . That starting to eat, move & live differently requires massive forgiveness and mental resilience.

. . . That life is supposed to be simple, easy & chock-full of miracles. We’re the ones who complicate things. And we’re the ones who can choose to change.

Wondering How I Got Here…

(it’s a really good story . . .)

Imagine a talented, driven and deeply imbalanced 22-year old woman.

She’s a rising magazine writer. A champagne-guzzling, drug-poppin’, sleep-deprived, perpetually hungover party girl.

Not a ton of self-esteem — but tremendous potential.
And so much love to give — if she could only figure out how to love herself, first.

Now imagine that girl at the doctor’s office, discovering that her entire left arm & shoulder is riddled with cancer (a rare one called epithelioid sarcoma) — and that the only option (if she wants to survive) is full amputation.

That girl was me. Just five years ago.

It’s hard to believe, because my whole life — my priorities, my values, my choices, the way that I listen to my body & nourish myself — is SO different, today.

I didn’t chop off my arm. I didn’t go into aggressive, full-body chemotherapy.
I didn’t accept that my doctor’s ‘solution’ was the only course of action.

I decided that I would do everything in my power to thrive in life, in spite of the looming expiration date I’d been given.
I learned how to treat myself with absolute kindness & self-respect.
I radicalized my diet. I systematically detoxified my body — and mind.
I discovered that wellness isn’t a destination, but a loving (and unconditionally forgiving) relationship with your own body.

And somewhere along the way, I realised that I was more than a ‘cancer story’ — I was a leader, a role model, an educator, and a champion. Part of an empowering wellness revolution, sweeping the planet. Someone who could change lives & provide HOPE — simply by showing up, and telling my story.

So that’s what I do. Every single day, here at The Wellness Warrior. I tell my story.
People listen, and chime in. And together, we encourage & inspire one another to treat our bodies — and design our lives — with absolute kindness.

Lets dive into Jess’s interview!

What does limitless living mean for you?

For me, limitless living means freedom. It means living life on my terms and not being restricted by limitations placed on us by people outside of ourselves or by our own minds. It means consciously being aware of how I limit myself with out-dated belief systems, and having the courage to step out and into the life I know I have available to me.

What has been your biggest challenge in life where you were faced with limitation in some way? How did you move through it?

I was diagnosed with terminal cancer six years ago, and ever since I’ve been on a mission to heal my body with natural methods. Some of these methods, however, have placed more limits on me than my actual dis-ease. Every part of my healing journey has been necessary, but the challenge for me has been recognizing when it’s time to move on and evolve from one thing. Like a diet, for example. I started to fear what would happen if I didn’t follow certain dietary rules. I’ve finally reached a point where I can see food for what it is and how it nourished me, without giving all of my power away to it. When we give our power away to forces outside of ourselves, fear breeds within us.

How often do you follow your intuition/gut feel in life?

I aim to do this all the time. When we follow our gut feeling, we will always be rewarded for it.

What has been the most supportive practice you found to which has helped you through times when life felt limited?

A daily meditation practice has been so supportive to me through some super tough times. I lost my mum at the end of last year and I credit my meditation practice for helping me keep perspective and enabling me to function in the world. Meditation allows me to be present more throughout the day, and when we’re truly living in the present moment we have no worries or concerns. Presence gives us super powers.

How important has it been for you in working on yourself? Did you or do you have a mentor?

I work with a spiritual mentor and medical intuitive called Belinda Davidson who coaches me through limiting beliefs and helps locate and me peel back the layers. She’s brilliant.

So lets say in this moment you are totally limitless, free and happy. What would you love to do next?

I have complete faith that my ideal life will just keep unfolding when and as it’s supposed to as long as I continue to live on purpose and in service. It’s the simple things in my life that bring me the most joy though – playing with my dogs, hanging out with my family, and brainstorming ways we can turbo-charge our mission while having the best time ever. This is what I want to do now, next and always.

Great interview! Jess is amazing 🙂

  2. She is one very special human!

  3. Brenda Clark says:

So very sad – first her Mum, now Jess – she cancelled Utopia appearances due to her cancer becoming aggressive. Not sure what to believe out of all the advice she gives.

  4. Hi Brenda, it is sad but I believe everyone should be free to live the way they feel is best for them. There is no right or wrong way to deal with something than just doing what feels true for you. She's sharing her story and I believe the best part of that is that it gives others permission to look at their own options and make decisions for themselves just like she has done 😉
