Just A Thought Away

One of the most amazing things I noticed when I started to practice being present was how noisy my mind was. Wow!!! The noise was deafening at first. When I started to place my awareness on the thoughts that were passing through my mind, it was bedlam. I felt insane!

I heard my mentor say recently that apparently only 3% of the population is actually thinking. The rest think they are thinking.

Following our feelings over our thinking becomes an art. When we are doing so, we are actually having new thoughts, rather than our thoughts having us.

Being able to work out the difference between what was actually my feeling and what was my limiting mind chatter was, at first, really confronting. The reason was: I found myself thinking:

• ‘Am I making the right choice?’
• ‘How would I know if it was the right choice??’

I wouldn’t know about the wisdom of my choices until I had experienced the next moment. The most important thing was that I was willing to take that leap. In doing so, I started to become more familiar with what was me following my feeling over thinking rather than my thinking driving me.

Yes, I made mistakes. But, it was my failures and wrong choices that allowed me to observe what was actually true for me. More is lost in our indecision than when we simply choose to decide.

I started to realize that the clearer I became within myself, by being present, the clearer my mind became. I observed I was actually making choices based on nothing external.

My thoughts came from a place different from where I had already been. My mind seemed to free itself from being trapped in thinking. Instead, my limitless self was using my mind.

New ideas, new thoughts, would form. I was now viewing my external world in a much different way.

Are you on the rollercoaster of your mind’s thinking throughout the day? Have you taken time to actually observe your thoughts?

I struggle with the clutter and limiting indecision quite often as well, how do you go about silencing it?

and you’re so right when saying only 3% of the world are really thinking and being aware of what is actually going on.

      Hi Gerhard,
Firstly its great you are able to observe that you struggle with it. Next best thing now is to just let it be. You will never go to battle with your thoughts and win, this is just your ego reinforcing itself.
So let it play out by bringing your attention into the here and now, bring your awareness into your feet.
Allow yourself to become present and then the decision your looking for will already be there. It always is, its just we get in the way by looking for reasons and justification to ‘think’ we are the one making the choices… Welcome to your ego.

I find what works for me is if I have an unwanted thought I observe it and except it, but if there is a feeling attached to the thought I sit with the feeling allow it to be there with no judgement.
